Give good, clean clothes:
Before school starts in September hundreds of people in our region start sorting through their drawers and closets for good clothing that they no longer wear. These folks remove anything worn out or damaged, wash and carefully fold their items, and some sort them by type to bring to our annual clothing drive in mid August. Children's clothing is especially needed. Left over clothing is usually sent to other organizations.
Make mittens and hats for winter:
Folks who know how to knit also start up in the fall making mittens, gloves, scarves and hats for distribution to children who have none. The First Congregational Church sets up a mitten tree and takes the mountain of mittens to Fair Haven Graded School for cold hands and heads through the rest of the winter. Good yarn and commercially made mittens and more are also welcome.
Infant & Children's cothing is always neded!
Families with children have exceptional expenses. Often tiny children's clothes cost as much as large adult sizes, but they fit for a few short weeks of months. good, clean children¹s and infants clothing is always welcome.
Clothing:
Every August we gather more than four thousand pounds of clothing - enough to fill the gymnasium at St. Mary's School twice. Friends from all around the area bring in good, clean, used clothing. An army of volunteers sorts and folds the clothing, displaying it on tables that cover the entire area of the gymnasium. Then for four days, afternoons and evenings, more than seven hundred men, women and children from more than twenty-five towns descend on the school to find their winter's clothing. We want to free folks so they do not have to choose between food or heat of clothes this winter. We welcome the donation of good (not torn or worn out), clean clothing on Sunday through Tuesday of the week of the drive. Left over clothing is usually sent to other organizations.
The dates for 2009 will be August 11-13 to get families ready before school starts.
Vouchers for Clothing: During the rest of the year people still have needs for clothing and have no funds with which to purchase them. Two area groups generously accept vouchers to provide essential clothing. Check in with our director, Julie Austin, if you have a need.
